Nurbolat Masanov – scientist and citizen

On April 19, 2024, an international round table was held at the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Almaty) on the topic “The role of Nurbolat Masanov in the formation of the historical and socio-political thought of Kazakhstan.” It was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the birth of Nurbolat Edygeevich Masanov, a graduate of the Faculty of History of Kazakh State University, graduated in 1976, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor, political scientist, and public figure.

Famous historians, political scientists, public figures from France, Russia, the Netherlands, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan took part in the round table. The moderator of the round table is Gulmira Salimzhanovna Sultangalieva, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of al-Farabi KazNU,a graduate of our university, made a report “The contribution of Nurbolat Masanov to the development of historical science in Kazakhstan.”

Director of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Vladivostok), Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Nikolai Nikolaevich Kradin made a report “The Nomadic Civilization of Nurbolat Masanov.”

The head of the Center for the Study of General Problems of the Modern East of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), Candidate of Historical Sciences Sergei Alekseevich Panarin made a report on the topic “Nurbolat Masanov - the unity of the scientific and the human.”

Nurbolat Masanov stood at the origins of the formation of political science in Kazakhstan. A graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science of KazNU, Sanat Kairslyamovich Kushkumbayev, now a Doctor of Political Sciences, a visiting researcher at the Elliott School of International Relations at George Washington University (USA), made a report “The Contribution of N.E. Masanov in the formation and development of political science in Kazakhstan.”

Foreign and domestic round table participants took part in the discussion of the reports, including graduates of the faculties of KazNU: history, journalism, philosophy, and political science. Gumilyov ENU; Laila Seisembekovna Akhmetova, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of KazNU; Amanzhol Boranbayuly Kalysh, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museology of KazNU; Aibolat Kairslyamovich Kushkumbaev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Regional Studies, L.N. The round table was held in a hybrid format

The speakers and round table participants who spoke in the debate emphasized that the scientific and social activities of Nurbulat Edygeevich Masanov - an outstanding historian and ethnologist, politician and political scientist, publicist, and citizen - gave a new impetus to the development of cognitive and political culture and contributed to the rise of self-awareness of the people.

The French Institute for Central Asian Studies (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) translated and published the book by N.E. Masanova “Nomadic civilization of the Kazakhs”. The presentation of the French edition was attended by Vincent Fourniau, professor at the Higher School of Social Sciences-EHESS (Paris, France), Xavier Hallez, senior researcher at IFEAC (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic), Catherine Poujol Pujol], professor of history and civilizations of Central Asia at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations [INALCO] (Paris, France).

The round table participants expressed gratitude to French scientists for translating the fundamental monograph by N.E. Masanova. In addition, a presentation of N.E.’s website was held at the round table Masanova – nurbulatmassanov.kz

The round table was sponsored by an outstanding graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, President of Almaty University Management Asylbek Bazarbaevich Kozhakhmetov and his wife Maral Bulatovna Kozhakhmetova.
